The watchtower on the eastern fringe of the Vorderer Schloßbuck was attached to the Raetian Wall at some point after the Wall’s construction around 200 A.D. With its front facing north-east, the tower offered a good view of the Altmühl valley beyond the Limes.

Like its counterpart on the western slope of the Vorderer Schloßbuck, the tower was unusually large (4,80 x 7,60 m). This was probably due to both towers’ position right next to passageways through the Limes, which required special control.

Unlike Hadrian’s Wall in Roman Britain which was built as an impenetrable barrier of 5 m height, the lower (3 m) and less massively constructed Raetian Wall rather served as a demarcation line indicating the Roman territory.
