Here in Roman times the Limes crossed the valley of the river Altmühl, leaving a gap in the wooden palisade and the later stone wall. The road running along right behind the Raetian Wall continued through a paved ford in the river bed. It was used by Roman troops patrolling the Limes and served for the traffic between the military forts at Gunzenhausen and Gnotzheim.
The river crossing was controlled by a watchtower of 4 x 5,8 m which was attached to the Raetian Wall some time after 200 A.D.
Due to the humid soil of the former river bed also some wooden structures were preserved, the interpretation of which will have to await further archaeological investigation.
