The excavators of the „Reichs- Limeskommission“ in the late 1800s documented an unusually small stone building (3,13 x 2,80 m) which obviously had been attached to the Raetian Wall in the 3rd century.
A similarily sized structure was found 4 km to the west in the Filchenhard forest. Both buildings were too small to accommodate the Roman soldiers patrolling the Limes.
The troops garrisoned along the Limes consisted of auxiliary units whose soldiers were not Roman citizens by birth but socalled „peregrini“ from the Roman provinces.
After 25 years of service in the army, the auxiliary soldiers and their descendants were awarded Roman citizenship, a legal status equal to that of born Romans.
